How we rate the evidence

Mainstream
•
Supported by at least one well-designed randomised controlled trial or systematic review, or recommended by NICE or an equivalent clinical guideline.

Promising
•
Supported by observational studies, pilot trials, clinical consensus or case series, or a strong theoretical basis and early trial data. Not yet at large-scale trials or formal endorsement.

Emerging
•
At an earlier stage still. The evidence is limited or preliminary, often resting on theoretical rationale and small studies.
